Shine a light on violence against women
Day 15 - violence and homelessness
The relationship between homelessness and domestic violence is a complex one. There are often a number of factors at play in addition to the domestic violence including socioeconomic disadvantage, mental illness and poor access to housing.
Domestic and family violence is a leader driver of homelessness in Australia.
In 2012-13 it was the most common mail reason people gave for seeking assistance from homelessness services (AIHW, 2013), with 32% (77,870 people) of people who received assistance escaping domestic and family violence.
The majority of people who received assistance from homelessness services because of domestic and family violence were women and children. Females (aged over 15) accounted for 67% of this group, with children under 14, 25%.
