Be a part of Homeless Persons’ Week

Homeless Persons’ Week aims to raise awareness of homelessness and the people it affects as well as celebrate the work that organisations and individuals do to help those experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness.

There are three ways you can be involved!

Be a partner             Be a sponsor           Be a supporter

BE A PARTNER

Become a partner of HPW by holding an event during Homeless Persons’ Week!

Holding an event is an exciting way to connect with your network and community while raising awareness of homelessness.

Homelessness Australia can support your event by providing you with posters, fact sheets and merchandise to help you promote your event.

*Please note: merchandise is dependent on funding and is restricted to organisations/individuals who have registered an event with Homelessness Australia for HPW. Restrictions apply for non-financial members of Homelessness Australia.

What sort of event should I hold?

Holding an event with ONE person

If fundraising, choose a local charity or community organisation to support.*

  • Set up an awareness stall (permission may be required for your chosen location) – stalls are best set up in busy public places
  • Busk for charity (permission may be required for your chosen location)
  • Hand out awareness flyers in a busy public area (permission may be required for your chosen location)
  • Volunteer for a local organisation/charity involved in HPW
  • Write emails/letters to your local/state/federal politicians about homelessness and housing
  • Give a presentation to students or a Rotary club on homelessness

Holding an event with TWO to TEN people

If fundraising, choose a local charity or community organisation to support.*

  • Hold a morning/afternoon tea or dinner
  • Organise a blanket/can/toiletry drive for a local organisation/charity

Holding an event with more than TEN people

If fundraising, choose a local charity or community organisation to support.*

  • A sleepout, concert, BBQ picnic in the park, exhibition, fun run or march
  • A morning/afternoon tea or dinner
  • Organise a blanket/can/toiletry drive for a local organisation/charity

*It is best to talk with the charity you wish to support (prior to planning your event). This will ensure you have their support, and you will be collecting the items they need most.

Decide on a date

Hold the event on a date that will provide maximum awareness (eg if you are hosting a morning tea at work, choose a day when most people are able to attend).

Decide how you are going to advertise your event

You need to have something to give out, or link people to your event.

Be sure to include a title for your event, why you are holding it (eg raise funds/awareness for xxx during HPW), location, date, time and a contact for your event.

Make sure you promote your event!

Give out your flyers, put details on your website and use social media to let people know what is going on.

You can contact your local paper and/or radio to see if they will publicise your event. See some ideas about contacting media here.

Register your event with Homelessness Australia

Now for the important part!

Let us know about your event so we can promote it! By registering your event you will be eligible to receive resources and merchandise for your event (*Please note: merchandise is restricted for non-financial members of Homelessness Australia).
