In Homelessness Week 2026 we launched our new Strategic Plan.

Our purpose is clear: to bring together and lead national efforts for evidence-informed policy, practice and action to prevent homelessness and reduce its impacts.

Homelessness Australia is uniquely placed to do that. We bring together frontline services, people impacted by homelessness, jurisdictional peaks and networks, researchers, data institutions, policy and decision makers, and the broader community. This Strategy harnesses that strength.

It is also guided by some simple principles. We will work beside people with lived experience, walk with First Nations organisations, be evidence led, connect systems and sectors, join forces for impact, represent the diversity of homelessness across Australia, and stay focused on solutions.

Our Strategy is built around three ambitions.

First, a strong and capable specialist homelessness sector.

That means helping the sector thrive through better funding and commissioning, a stronger workforce, culturally safe and responsive services, and a relentless focus on growing what works.

Our flagship initiative is the Homelessness Impact Hub. It will connect data, research, lived experience and practice insights to help the sector grow what works, increase its impact, and build the muscle to deliver best practice.

Our second ambition is systems change to end homelessness.

The Strategy focuses on the upstream changes needed to close the well-worn pathways into homelessness and reduce the need for crisis responses.

To achieve that, we will seize opportunities to shape major national reforms. Our priorities include better coordination across Australian Government portfolios, a stronger National Partnership Agreement, a dedicated First Nations Homelessness Plan, and robust measures to track progress and strengthen accountability.

Our third ambition is to ensure Homelessness Australia has the credibility, capability and connections needed to lead change, influence systems and unite the sector.

Achieving that will require an engaged and representative membership, a strong alliance of homelessness and jurisdictional peaks, purposeful partnerships, strong governance, organisational capability, and long-term financial sustainability.

Despite the scale of the challenge, we are optimistic. Together, we can shift from crisis to prevention, from services under pressure to systems that work, and from ad hoc responses to coordinated, evidence-driven action.
